How you feel about your smile has an impact on how you present yourself to the world. Feeling confident about your smile can influence confidence in other areas of your life as well. If you don’t like to smile, you might be hiding your true self from the world.
If you want to smile more but you don’t feel confident about it, there are ways to improve your smile that do not involve a visit to the dentists’ chair. Here are five things that you can do to improve your smile today:
1. Check Out Your Teeth
It almost sounds like a no-brainer, right? However, you may be surprised at what might be lurking between your teeth. Before you take that impromptu selfie, take a look in the mirror and make sure that there is nothing funky staring back at you.
For the long-term, brushing your teeth daily with a whitening toothpaste can keep your smile bright and ready.
2. Posture Up
When smiling, your posture matters more than you may think. It’s best to keep your spine straight and your shoulders back as you smile. When taking a picture, turn your head at an angle to avoid having your face square with the camera.
3. Work Out Your Facial Muscles
Did you know that it only takes 17 facial muscles to smile? (By comparison, frowning uses 43 muscles.) Most people do not think about the muscles in the face as being able to be exercised but why not? It is proven that exercise helps to improve the look of your body. The same is true for your face: exercising your facial muscles can make you look younger and lift your skin naturally.
There are some exercises that you can do to improve your smile too. Here’s an easy one: fold your lips inside of your mouth to cover your teeth. Next, while keeping your mouth closed, raise the corners of your mouth into a closed-mouth smile. Hold for a few seconds and then release.
4. Practice Your Smile
Practicing your smile in the mirror is a great way to find out what kind of smile fits you best. As you practice, you will become more comfortable and your smile will be more natural. Have some fun with it and practice your smile from different angles too.
5. Keep It Natural
The most genuine smiles come from within. The best way to have a natural smile is to think about something that makes you happy. It could be your pet, your best friend, or your favorite memory. Thinking of something that makes you happy is a sure way to have a genuine smile ready whenever you need it.
